The Dreaming-Rise Again

In the year that modern rock and industrial music began to take a more "ear catching" form, a band was on the rise by the name of Stabbing Westward.  Featuring lead vocalist Christopher Hall, along with Walter Flakus, who is the keyboard master for the group; Stabbing Westward was beginning to make their marks on the music industry.  With the release of "UnGod", a song, which was also remixed for the soundtrack of the movie "Clerks", was titled "Violent Mood Swings".  It began to define their tone of music for some time to come.  The one time drummer for the band even has returned to The Dreaming, to assist in the so called "Rise Again" slogan going around of the band.  Please do not mistake, this is not Stabbing Westward, however, the lead guys in the band, Chris and Walter, definitively want that sound.  They have been hearing their fans clamor for this sound, this punishing industrial, metal, rock sound that defined Stabbing Westward in their days.  The current sounds of The upcoming February release of "Rise Again", just about sound like an excellent remix between Stabbing Westward's album "Save Yourself" and their final album that they released, which was self-titled, and featured the hit "So Far Away".  Rounding out the band's line up, which was ever changing throughout this band's progression, is Walter Flakus on keyboards and mix arrangements, Christopher Hall on song writing, arrangements, and main vocals, drums being pounded out by Brent Ashley, and the bass being played finely by the lady known as Franccesca De Struct.  Seeing her live on some fan filmed footage on Youtube, you can see she has what it take to keep this band above the ashes of what was Stabbing Westward.  "Alone", which had a previous review here, is the lead single from "Rise Again", and if you bought it at first, there were three different versions of this track.  I really do not understand the need for this remixing a lead single basically in three manners, of only one really making the album, but it was the direction the band went.  The song, at it's basis, is great, and tends to lead you to believe it is the "Rise Again" of the Stabbing Westward-like sounds.  "Kisses Taste Like Death" is a thrill ride, which almost has a soothing rock sound to it, if that makes since.  The lyrics are dark, and Christopher Hall does one hell of a job extending his range on the track.  Another killer song, and this one is in fact my "pick", or favorite off "Rise Again", is the song "Destroy'.  There is without a doubt a moment in this song where I was like, "whoah"!!  It delivers many tastes of old school Stabbing Westward, and yet, still seems to ooze old school sounds of the beginnings of this project called The Dreaming.  Remember, the band The Dreaming, have been slowly creeping up since around 2005-2006.  With many EP's and two previous albums called "Etched In Blood", and "Puppet", they have continued to push on and pursue their soul's desire.  Though changing the names of songs a few times along the way, it is confusing at times, and a bit deceiving, but it was like I said, the band's progression.  "Painkillers", off of the latest release "Rise Again", is perhaps the best hard hitting track, if you are looking for the more upbeat and throttling styles of Chris and the band.  For me, it was solid, yet, it seemed to lack some substances that made other songs on the album more stronger.  Finally, I have to admit a few things here.  The weakest song on the album, and this is by far, has got to be "Throw It Away".  It just seemed that there was not much effort put into this song, and reminded me of a leftover from, say the "Etched In Blood" style times.  Another final item is that I suggest you not expect an entire basically "new" Stabbing Westward" sounding album, because this is not at all.  Yes, there are some more heavy, more industrial, better lyrics, and stronger passion heard within Chris's vocals, but this is not, at least in my opinion, a "resurrection" .  However, with all that being said, the album, sitting at ten tracks, is relatively priced at a great rate, and is without much doubt worth the purchase.  Especially if you are one of those wanting a better version of this band, or have been yearning to hear better music overall these day, this is up your alley, and the way to go.

Nine Inch Nails-Hesitation Marks

Industrial rocker, and music icon Trent Reznor's new look Nine Inch Nail's line up on tour, hasn't seemed to affect the music he pours his soul into.  Introducing the record is the entrancing short intro titled "The Eater of Dreams".  It leads way into the first full length song, which kicks into gear  as
"Copy of A".  This song, along with a track called "Everything", are sounds of very early Nine Inch Nail's material, and lacks the heavy chords we lust and wait in lines for.  Our anticipation most assuredly wasn't hoping for this.  "Came Back Haunted", is a solid tune, which was their first single released off the album, and its similar to a cut, in my opinion from their solid album, WITH TEETH. "Find My Way", sounds like a more bluesy, Johnny Cash influenced track.  Nothing against the legend himself, I just think Reznor could have used more anger, and much less boredom and sadness thus far into the album.   "All Time Low" hits the spot for me, it definitely is my favorite track from the record.  Even still, the WITH TEETH feel remains, but you get more of a FRAGILE residue from this one, and that rocks, in my accord.  The vulgar language show Trent still has the attitude, and knows what he's doing lyrically, I don't he's lost it with this album, I just think the diversity with it may be too much for the great anticipation.  "Various Methods Of Escape" takes us on a journey that reminds you of THE DOWNWARD SPIRAL days, with a bit less of anger.  Nonetheless, its a major song to reckon with on HESITATION MARKS.  "In Two", shows an '80's vibe, with an electronic twist, and aggressive tone, and a reserved tank for anger that Trent readies for release at any moment.  "Black Noise", is a perfect ending to the Non-Remix disc of the deluxe edition.  It is highly instrumental, holds ups and down, very dark and grey in areas, and has scratchy moments that give the listener reason to believe Nine Inch Nails is not over with as a band yet.  This is a hesitation..........I say, don't "hesitate", on September 3rd, pick a copy of the record, HESITATION MARKS up ,and give it time, you'll enjoy this.  No disappointment overall!!

Element A440-Whips, Knives, Candles, and Quills

Element A440 aren't new to the scene at all, and you can tell right off the
bat by their sounds.  If they remind you of a more industrial version of a pissed off Marilyn Manson, then you are headed in the right direction.  This band was introduced to me a bit back, by a former friend of mine, and I've been hooked since.  Their latest release, not simply titled, WHIPS, KNIVES, CANDLES, AND QUILLS, is a powerhouse of rock, industrial, and addicting music!  Their first single from the album, and my favorite from the effort as well, titled "Kookie Kutter", is fantastic!!  It is well put together, and lyrically stabs at you in every imaginable way.  The music video is featured below, and there are three versions, including one live cut, of the song on video, I've featured version one.  It's a simple lyric theme for "Kookie Kutter", the basic, "...if you like violence...say ya....if you like...."and so on, but the groove is catchy, and reminds us so much of Manson, you cannot help but get hooked somewhat to most of the fourteen track on the album.  Another highlight of the effort is "Something Cruel", which is a more dark and twisted song, somewhat slower than others on the album.  "The Sore" is an infectious track, with a hook the reels you in, and a disease the you just fucking love!!  The worst track on the latest album, if I was to pick one, would be "Godidiotocracy".  The title is just stupid, and it doesn't really catch my attention at any point in the song at all.  However, that being said, I would definitely grab the whole album at a digital outlet, it's worth the "infectious hook" it brings with it, and you'll enjoy it overall, I'm pretty certain of that much.  Oh ya, there is no doubt :)

Device-"Vilify" (Single)

On April 9th, 2013, David Draiman unleashes the debut album of his newest project, Device.  The band is compromised of Geno Lenardo, of Filter fame, as well.  The album will feature appearances by M.Shadows, Tom Morello, Serj, Geezer Butler, and more iconic rockers.  The focus of this record, and project, is in the studio, and some enigmatic production.  The first single, and let me first say, it's electric, is called "Vilifiy".  The single is set to hit all digital outlets for sale on Tuesday, February 19th.  There is a lot of industrial powerhouse, guitar-laced strength represented on "Vilify".  For those expecting just another "Disturbed-sounding" song, well, don't get your hopes too high.  This track will sound like David Draiman, of course, after all it is his voice.  Yet, I sense his angst, his willingness to share with us the passion he's grown with, to share this style of rock, this industrial music with us.  He does that very, very well with "Vilify".  Similar to the keyboards and synths you will soon hear in the up and coming California band, Fiction Killer, Device has made it's presence well felt inside of "Vilify" with powerhouse synths and keys...lacing the track with demanding vocals, ranging guitars, and piercing electronics that would blow Wayne Static out of the water.  I highly recommend you hit up Amazon, I-Tunes, or another digital outlet store on February 19th to pick this single up, and grab the album on 04/09/2013.  You don't want to miss this, no way.

Fiction Killer-"All My Enemies Are Dead" (Single)

Wow.  This song kicks into high gear right away, and you never stop grooving to it.  With a vocalized intro, it lyrically takes the music world with a vengeance.  "You're going to get what you deserve...." so screams the angry vocals of Omar Montanez, along with the raging guitar and programming of Ty Oliver, and the entire track is laced with the drums of Samus Paulicelli and the thunderous bass power of Finn Stobbe.  I've repeated the track three times now, causing me to delay getting this review done...lol, but my God, you have no idea what you're in for next week.  Fiction Killer is set to blow you away, and they're giving us it all for free....what more can one ask for?  In the beginning of the track, it's repeated that "this is not reality, not reality...."...you'll feel that way because reality doesn't have music this incredibly good.  "All My Enemies Are Dead" might just get me evicted from my apartment, but I can blame Ty for that, or the speakers...lol. "This song has screams, angst, haunting echoes, and lyrics that have me stirring up right now, wanting the whole album immediately....it's becoming a craving.   This, all I'll say, is going to be an amazing Valentine's Day present for anybody that grabs it up.  If you do not, you do not know music.  You also are deaf. LoL.  Fiction Killer is on the scene now, get ready people!
